He was a Nazarite like Samson. He ate no food that could be considered unclean or not kosher slaughtered etc. No fermented food, drink beer, vinegar of wine. He could cut his hair or wear clothing but camel skins. A vow was made from birth to death to live this way as symbolic crown of separation from the people. He was considered a holy man.

John the Baptist.
None of the four gospels say anything about John's mother, Elizabeth bringing him to the desert. John was fulfilling prophesy and followed Gods directions. I would assume that John was led to the desert region by God.

Well there is not a book of the bible where it specifically says "John the Baptist is a voice crying out in the desert. But there is a prophecy in the old testament which is referring to John the Baptist. It is Isaiah 40:3 and it says "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: " Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God." Hope that helps.
