They also had to make sure that troublemakers were removed. They had to maintain military forces, but also had to try to keep taxes low so they did not wind up having to deal with peasant revolts. They had to be careful to make sure there was a recognized heir, but also that the heir would not try to get rid of them. It was not an easy job.
