Martin Beck was probably Houdini's biggest supporter and inspiration. Beck saw Houdini perform and was impressed. He was the first person to book him in big theaters and is the reason Houdini became so famous.
When Houdini stopped his Coney Island shows, he tried to get a full time magic career. He met Martin Beck, a manager in Woodstock, Illinois in 1899. Beck was impressed by Houdini's handcuff skills and advised him to stick to escape acts. Houdini was also booked on the Orpheum vaudeville circuit.
After Martin Beck put Houdini on the Orpheum circuit, one of his notable acts was the "Chinese Water Torture Cell." In this thrilling performance, Houdini was suspended upside down in a locked glass tank filled with water, from which he had to escape. The act showcased his incredible skill and showmanship, captivating audiences and solidifying his reputation as a master escape artist.
