Migrant workers, and workers in general typically ate: rabbits, squirrels, deer, corn bread, and beans, when they weren't lucky enough to have typical meal they'd eat turnip greens and wild greens such as dandelions and watercress. Some ate fish when available and nearly anything they could catch that didn't eat them first. Stealing food was rampant in California.Go read "The grapes of wrath" by John Steinbeck. Howhave migrant workers from Great Depression affected the U.S today?

As WWII started, many of the migrant workers during the years of the Great Depression either joined the military or took advantage of the jobs that were opening up because of the need for war material. Many of the "Okies" that came to California found jobs in the shipyards and defense plants on the west coast. The migrant farmers, grouped into the term "Okie," found a more stable lifestyle and families put down roots in California and other western states, like New Mexico and Arizona. Their descendants continue to live there today. The type of farming that caused the migrant "farmer" to find work continues today but most commercial farms now hire migrant workers and many provide temporary shelter at the work sites during the season. Many of these jobs have been taken over by immigrants from nations south of the border, both legal and illegal, which has helped add to the current national debate over what the government should do about our current immigration laws.

What kind of work do migrants do?

The type of work depends on the migrant and the location. Many migrants find work on farms harvesting. But in big cities, you may just as well find them fixing automobiles, working in factories, or remodeling homes. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a few migrant doctors and lawyers too! All ranges of people cross the borders to find work, poor and rich, educated and not educated. So it all entirely depends on the migrant in question. Obviously, jobs requiring certification would be harder for a migrant to get, the doctor being a good example, since you must be certified to be a doctor. But it goes back to the original issue, is it depends on the migrant. Not all migrants are illegal. So technically, if a doctor from Pakistan wanted to work in the US, they might get a visa and all the proper paperwork to enter the country, and then travel here and become a doctor here, but you could still call them a migrant, since they weren't born here. In summary, migrant workers do a complete range of tasks from the everyday to the extraordinary, just like anyone else, it just depends on the migrant youre talking about.
