The most important and prominent thing that was naturally developed in California during the Spanish settlement were agriculture. Settlers had to learn to live off the land and were very successful in doing so.
The early settlers came from Asia, across the Bering Sea.
Most settlers could not speak Spanish and therefore had trouble getting title to their land without an empresario's help. Most of the desirable lands were held by and empresario.
So the settlers didn't have to do most of the work.
Because it was right across the Bering Strait. You know.... short trip?
the early settlers passed on a legend that said the gods were turned to stone
