Most ate barley soup and bread for lunch if they had one. Lunch is a modern idea and through the centuries people ate twice a day. In the morning and in the evening. They ate barley because it was cheap and it filled them up.

Everyday many people ate rye breads ( wheat was very expensive) and soups. Both didn't require a lot to make and the soup can be made from any items at hand.
