I would say the person who improved farming more than anyone else was George Washington Carver.

George Washington Carver was born into slavery. When George was only a week old, he, a sister, and his mother were kidnapped. His mother and sister were never seen again--NOTE, no where does it say she was sold into slavery, and in fact, she had already been a slave before the kidnapping! Soon after the kidnapping, George was found and ransomed, and was raised by his mother's former owner, Moses Carver. This occurred in Arkansas during the Civil War (1864 or 1865) when slavery was still practiced in the South. George Washington Carver later distinguished himself as an innovative scientist. The sad truth about this is that there were many cases of of women with newborns (especially male babies) or children being kidnapped with their mothers in European colonization of Africa and throughout history. If you are looking for some incident other than George Washington Carver, you will have to be more specific when asking a new question.NOTE: Some people have INCORRECTLY STATED that Booker T. Washington was this person. This info is completely wrong! George Washington Carver's parents were Mary and Giles Carver, and were slaves owned by Susan and Moses Carver. When George was only one week old, he, a sister, and his mother got kidnapped by night raiders from Arkansas. Moses sent out John Bentley to find them, but only George was found.People in the 1800s often did not keep records of birth, and this was not required by State laws. So it is estimated that George Washington Carver was born about 1864 in Diamond, Missouri. Since he was a few weeks old when he was kidnapped with his mom and sister, we can assume this occurred in 1864, if the estimated birth year is correct. Please see:http://www.biography.com/people/george-washington-carver-9240299To dispel other wrong stories, please also see:What_famous_African-American_was_just_a_few_weeks_old_when_he_and_his_mother_were_kidnappedand seeDid_George_Washington_Carver_and_his_mother_get_kidnapped_when_he_was_a_few_weeks_old
That's really hard to say, depending on your definition of 'Scientist". Many people would consider Benjamin Banneker the first, while others would say it was George Washington Carver.
He had at least one sister and one brother. When George was only a few weeks old, he, his mother, a sister and a brother were all kidnapped from Moses Carver, slave-owner of George's parents. Moses Carver recovered George's brother James, who was just a toddler, and hired someone to find George's mother, sister and George. George's mother and sister were never found but George was recovered, and returned to Moses Carver. Moses and his wife Susan, raised George and his brother James as their own children.
