There have been several substitutes for paper as a writing medium. Cuneiform was written on soft clay tablets with a pointy stick. Papyrus was made of the core of reeds. Vellum was made from treated animal skins, and was traditionally used for ceremonial writings, such as the Torah, a college diploma, etc.
