The year 1990 was only 19 years ago as I type (in the year 2009). Clothing fashions have actually changed very little. Everything that was fashionable in 1990 is still fashionable today. The biggest visible change is that piercing is more popular.

Chinese people usually tend to wear red instead. Red means good luck. A reason Chinese people may wear gold is that gold is valuable. So they wear it to represent good fortune in the upcoming year.
Chinese people don't really wear anything special. They do wear red on Chinese New Year though. That is the only special outfit they wear that is the closest to Christmas.
