What is the value of pewter in general and the value of old pewter mugs?

The value of pewter in general is a great deal less than the value of gold because a pewter object may contain nearly about 95% tin. The other 5% may be a combination of materials including bismuth or lead. As to the value of old pewter mugs, the value is in that of the maker of the piece and the date of the piece. For example, a mug made and signed by Paul Revere would be more valuable than an unsigned piece of the same period. The general value of any antique item is usually the amount a buyer is willing to pay to acquire a piece.

What does pewter the metal feel like?

Pewter is a physically weighty metal alloy made from Lead and Tin (with trace quantities of Zinc and Nickel). To the touch it is naturally cool, and can be worked to feel very smooth. It also has an unusual (for metal) soft feel to it, almost like hard plasticine; you can gouge a fairly deep scratch in it with your fingernail for instance. It is a very pliable metal. Even at room temperature you can bend a relatively thick piece of Pewter with just your hands. Pieces up to around 6mm thick can be torn like paper by a person of average strength, in which respect it is much the same as Lead. It should be noted that some people are naturally mildly allergic to Pewter, and, while allergic reactions of any kind vary from person to person, the typical reaction to Pewter is that of small redened patches of skin and itching in the place that was in contact with the metal. I include this note only because some jewelery is made from Pewter. It is no more likely to cause a reaction than silver or gold, but as with any allergy, all individuals are different.

Does white metal corrode?

White metal: "Any of various whitish alloys, such as pewter, that contain high percentages of tin or lead." Yes, but very slowly. Tin and lead and pewter do not corrode easily. Also, the rate would decrease over time, as a layer of oxide would coat the surface preventing further corrosion.

The best pricing I have found for Franklin Mint soldiers is about 10.00. This is what they sell for on E Bay and at several auction houses I attend. A retail price would probably be quite a bit more but I have not located any at a retail store. Betty Stoneman Friendswood, Texas
