Probably the contribution most people would credit pope John XXIII with is the convoking of the Second Vatican Council. He opened the council on October 11, 1962 after claiming that it was an inspiration to call it in the first place. However, John died less than a year later, on June 3rd, 1963, while the council was still in session and thus never saw its fruits.

Pope John XXIII will always be remembered as the pope who convoked the Second Vatican Council. Currently, Catholics are highly divided on the significance of this event, although all agree it ushered in a new era. Liberal Catholics consider his conciliar vision to be a true God-send, breathing new life into the Church and necessarily adapting it to the modern world. Conservatives think he had a good vision but that it was naive, or at least abused by unscrupulous modernists that took its premise of reform and turned it into radical changes. Traditionalists see John XXIII as a very bad pope, a liberal who got elected to disseminate modern errors into the Church through the Council he called for that purpose. Sede Vacantists consider pope John XXIII to have been a heretic and thus he automatically lost the papal office and no pope has been legitimately elected since.

Pope Paul III was pope 1534-1549. This was the time of the Protestant Reformation. He is best remembered for calling the Council of Trent in 1545, which reformed the Church. A reform had been called for for a very long time but had been put off to the point that Some people left the Church and started the Protestant Reformation. There was a growing problem with corrupt men taking positions within the Church. People wanted this addressed. The Council of Trent eliminated most of these abuses and clarified practically every doctrine challenged by the Protestants. This is known as the "Counter-Reformation" and is sometimes referred to as the "Catholic Reformation." He approved the newly-founded Jesuit order. He also issued a proclamation that automatically excommunicated anyone who robbed the Native Americans or enslaved them, though it was later withdrawn after complaints by the leaders of some nations. It did much help the positions of those who fought slavery even after it was revoked.

While Pope John XXIII was responsible for calling the Vatican Council, he passed away before the council ended and before the changes promoted by that council were enacted. The changes recommended by the council were put in place by Pope Paul VI.
