The Roman soldier wore a tunic which was above the knee in the front and a little longer in the back. Over this he wore a padded, sleeveless vest called a "subarmalis" and over this he wore a cuirass of either chain mail or segmented metal plates. On his head he wore a helmet, of various styles which changed with the times.
There is controversy over the Roman military diet, as none of the ancient writers are specific about it. It's generally accepted that their diet was grain based, but meat was eaten when available and then generally only fresh meat in the colder weather, as meat would spoil in the heat of summer. Some sources say that they had a type of hard tack that was issued on a march along with an allotment of wheat. (one of the sources says that the soldiers would rather eat their shield covers before attempting to eat the hard tack). Most times the army would implement their diet by living off the land by requisitioning food and produce from the territory around them.
