One of Rome's most famous "modern" inventions was the aqueduct, a series of open pipes (like a skateboard half-pipe) that transported water into the city from distant water holdings.
This aqueduct system helped Romans to have a ready supply of water without having to drive an ox cart to a distant well, a really modern convenience in any time.
However, this open water system had it's disadvantages too: attacking armies could tear down the exposed aqueducts easily, cutting Rome's water supply and forcing it to rely on the wells in the city walls.
