Samuel Morse is credited with inventing the electromagnetic telegraph, though his patent was ignored and contested for many years. He also invented a marble cutting machine that could carve three-dimensional sculptures in marble and stone, but was unable to patent it because of an existing design by Thomas Blanchard.
Contrary to popular belief, Morse did not invent Morse Code (not by himself anyway), though it is named after him. Originally, Morse intended to transmit only numbers, and use a dictionary to look up each word according to the number which had been sent. Morse Code as we know it today was primarily developed by Morse's partner, Alfred Vail, who expanded it to include letters and special symbols.
Samuel B. Morse invented the Morse Code which allowed successful telegraph messaging.
