Only the most powerful samurai got land for their military service. most of the samurai that earned land didn't live on it but they did actually profit from it. every year the peasant farmers who worked on the land gave the samurai food or money. Samurai who received no land were given food-usually rice- as payment. Hoped it helped ;D
