The Spartans dressed very simply and practically because they had to be free to move (because the Spartans were always training for war). The women wore very short tunics with a slit up the side to allow them to exercise. This was shocking to other Greek women who all wore heavy, long robes.
While on the march, Spartan Hoplites wore distinctive scarlet capes which they discarded in battle. Other than that, the hoplites were fairly like those of the rest of Achaea, except they wore no sandals, I'm not so sure of their reasoning except to prove how hard they were, a fear/morale thing is my guess
