This "Fifth Beatle" was the original bass player before McCartney. He died on April 10, 1962, so McCartney would fill in prior to Beatlemania which started around '63.

Beatles (with an "A") is the name of the very (probably most) successful rock band. They were named after the insects - the members were fans of the Crickets and Stu Sutcliffe suggested Beetles and John Lennon changed the spelling to fit in with the "beat" music image.
He was a bassist, but to say he actually played it is a stretch.
