John Allan (a successful Scottish merchant) and Frances Valentine Allan (John Allan's wife) were a foster family to Poe. They also provided him with an excellent twelve year education.

When Edgar Allan Poe's parents died, he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Allan. Although he never formally adopted Poe, he was given the surname Allan, and Poe was raised by the Allans in Richmond, Virginia. Poe had a complicated relationship with the Allans, as he felt somewhat neglected and struggled with his sense of belonging.
In 1815, Edgar's foster family, The Allans, sailed to England. There, he attended the grammar school in Irvine,Scotland for a short period in 1815, until returning to the Allans in London in 1816.
Edgar Allan did not have adopted parents. Poe had foster parents. He was taken in by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan; however they never adopted him. The Allans had Poe baptized "Edgar Allan Poe." The relationship between John Allan and Edgar Allan Poe was eventually very strained, but in honor of his foster parents, Poe used the Allan name prominently even though he could have simply used the initial. Often, the name is misspelled as "Allen."
Poe's birth name was Edgar Poe. After Poe's parents died in late 1811 leaving him an orphan just before his third birthday, his foster parents John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia, had Poe baptized as Edgar Allan Poe, thereby giving Poe their last name as his middle name. Poe was never formally adopted by the Allans, and the name Allan was never his legal name, middle or otherwise. Since this was only a baptismal name, Poe did not have to use it, but he did so to honor his foster parents.
John Allan is Edgar Allan Poe's foster father.
He was Poe's foster father. Hence his middle name (Allan). He didn't wan't to change his last name in respect of his dead parents, so he moved it to his middle name. The Allans never adopted Poe, so he did not have to accept Allan as a last name either.
