First Bull Run
The Battle of Bull Run July 21st 1861 (also referred to as the Battle of Manassas) was the first real battle of the civil war. There was a battle previous, The battle of Fort Sumter, but no one died so it wasn't anything more than symbolic. The battle of Bull Run was actually quite brutal. here are the statistics. Union casualties were 460 killed, 1,124 wounded, and 1,312 missing or captured; Confederate casualties were 387 killed, 1,582 wounded, and 13 missing the real surprise was the fact that the union (who thought they were vastly superior and supplied) had lost the first battle of the war. Things would only really go down hill for the union until Gettysburg where Lee would begin to get pushed back south.
One reason is that one of the Confederate units were wearing blue, and the Union gunners didn't start firing on them till too late.

First Manassas/Bull Run. They caused great trouble by blocking the road the army needed to use.
Spectators at the Battle of First Bull Run, fought on July 21, 1861, gathered on nearby hills and elevated areas, particularly around Sudley Hill and the surrounding countryside in Virginia. Many were civilians from Washington, D.C., who came to witness what they believed would be a quick and decisive battle. The proximity of the conflict allowed them to observe the action, but the battle's chaos and violence quickly dispelled any notions of a swift resolution. As the battle unfolded, many spectators fled in panic as the reality of war became evident.
Manassas. The Yankees called the same Battle Bull Run. The Yankees named the battles after the nearest body of water, and the Rebels called them after the nearest town. A "run" is a large creek in that part of Virginia, and it was "bull" run because it was a place where the buffalo used to go to drink in the 1700s, before they were hunted out of existence in that area. There was another, even larger battle on the same ground the next year. Other battles with two names include Murfreesboro (Rebel) or Stones River (Yankee), and Sharpsburg (Rebel) or Antietam (Yankee).
