On February 1, 1994, the Department of Defense (DOD) leased the Disney Inn Resort for exclusive use by retired and active military personnel and their families, members of the reserves and the National Guard, and DOD civilians. These personnel were entitled to special hotel rates, substantially discounted attraction tickets, on-site laundry facilities, and tax-free Disney merchandise. The DOD subsequently purchased the hotel outright and changed its name to "Shades of Green" to signify the camouflage uniforms worn by the armed forces.
