The cats the lived in Egypt were generally Abyssinian cats and they were worshipped like gods for stopping plagues and eradicating rats. They also amazed the people with their agility, beauty and mystical eyes. They even had their own goddess, Bastet (Bast, Pasht). And when these cats died, they were mummified and buried, with jewellery, in tombs and the owners shaved their eyebrows off. If anyone killed a cat, the penalty was death.
