The Egyptians believed that a dead person's body must not decay. Other a person could not enjoy the afterlife.
They did it so the body could live with the soul in the after life
to preserve the body because they wanted it to be perfect for the afterlife.

Their beliefs led Egyptians to mummify their dead. When the person died their soul left their body. The soul was then judge by Osiris and to live eternally it must reunited with its body. The soul had to be able to recognize its body.

The Egyptians were worried that the body would decay really fast, so they started to mummify/preserve the dead. The Egyptians also strongly believed in the afterlife, so they buried their dead with things they believed they might need in the afterlife.

The Egyptians believed that the soul would leave the body after death. However, it was still the earthly vessel, and should the body be destroyed or rotted away, the soul would die. As a result, to keep that from happening, the Egyptians would mummify the dead.
It was an attempt to keep the body of the dead person available to them forever, as they would need it in the afterlife. Without their own body in the afterlife they could not "function" in the afterlife.
Because all Egyptians believe that the heart means Intelligence and the dead body will need it in heaven.
