The French built a fixed position of more than a dozen strong points at Dien Bien Phu, which was very far from main French bases, and was to be supplied by air strip. Dien Bien Phu ville is surrounded by higher ground. Giap brought artillery, by hand, up the hillsides and sited in on the air strip and strong points; artillery fire destroyed the targets one by one.
The Vietnamese made one early assault, which failed, and went back to the artillery bombardment of many days. Eventually, casualties and destruction was enough that the French surrendered in the face of a major assault.
