After Germany invaded Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany, starting the Second World War. No much happened for a bit after that, so it was called the Phoney War in Britain. But then Germany invaded France, and Belgium and the Netherlands as well, comprehensively defeating Britain and France, leading to the withdrawal and evacuation at Dunkirk. At this point Germany had basically complete control of mainland Europe, and Britain, which refused to surrender, was the natural next target for Hitler. The Germans knew that if the Royal Air Force was at full strength, it would be able to easily prevent the German invasion. So, the German Luftwaffe set about to cripple the RAF, attacking the Air bases and trying to destroy the British planes. At this point, the Battle of Britain, between the RAF and the Luftwaffe, had begun.
Zeppelins had two main roles, reconnaissance for the German Navy and bombing Britain, mainly London as this was the easiest target to find by night.

The Germans had to fly over the channel, which meant the fighers had a limited amount of fuel to fight whereas the British fighters would have more fuel and the ability to get re-fueled and come back The British could recover more pilots who had to ditch because they landed in Britain and also got more damaged planes back The British had a radar which could detect the German planes in the channel The Germans had poor strategy. Part of the way through the battle, the Germans switched to bombing London. While this terrorized the civilians in London, it allowed Fighter Command to recover from when they were the target earlier in the battle and provided a fixed target that Fighter Command could assume all bombers were heading for Britain had more able allies than the Germans

During World War II, the Battle of Hong Kong (in December 1941) happened for several interconnected reasons. First, it was controlled by Great Britain, even though it was traditionally a Chinese possession. Second, Japan engaged in war against Great Britain and the other Western Allies for the sake of expanding its influence throughout Asia. As a British outpost in the middle of Asia, then, Hong Kong was necessarily a target for Japanese attacks.
