I am not quite sure what you mean. They started out in Gary, Indiana; winning several talent contests (around 1964 - 1966ish), before finally moving on to professional work.
In 1968; they released their first single "Big Boy".
Michael joined in 1966 and became lead singer. Before then; Jermaine Jackson was lead singer.
Hope I helped. (:

Michael Jackson was first signed to Motown Records as part of the Jackson Five in 1969. He was 11 years old at the time.
Jermaine Jackson, one of the members of the Jackson Five, married his sister-in-law.
He performed for: The Jackson 5 The Jackson Five (Motown took control of the name Jackson 5 for legal purposes when they joined) And The Jackson Family (not as well known but Motown Records also took the name The Jackson Five when the Jacksons quit their deal with them)
The Jackson Five, comprised of five founding members, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael. The group was active from 1964 to 1990, this group was formed after an early incarnation called The Jackson Brothers, which originally consisted of the three older brothers. The Jackson Brothers with the original 3 members (Jackie, Tito, & Jermaine) was formed in 1963, the following year the two younger brothers joined the group (Marlon and Michael) playing tambourine and congas. Evelyn Lahaie, a local talent agent, suggested that the name be changed from The Jackson Brothers to The Jackson 5 (also spelled The Jackson Five and sometimes The Jackson 5ive)So The Jackson Brothers was formed first, but only lasted about a year until the two younger brothers joined and the name was changed to The Jackson Five.
