Vietcong
After the fall of the French garrison at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, it was partitioned into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The Vietnam War (1954-1975) grew out of the attempt by Communist Vietcong guerrillas backed by North Vietnam to overthrow the U.S.-supported regime in the south. The South Vietnamese government collapsed in 1975, and the country was reunited in 1976
The North Vietnamese Army was a regular army; just the like the US Army. The South Vietnamese communists living in South Vietnam were called the Viet Cong (VC); they were the guerrillas.
Red China/USSR supplied North Vietnam with material & South Vietnamese guerrillas called the Viet Cong supplied guerrillas in the fighting in South Vietnam. The US, Australia, New Zealand, S. Korea, S. Vietnam, Philippines, and Thailand supplied troops for the allied side during the war.
The USSR and Red China.
To try to stop North Vietnam from helping the Viet Cong guerillas, President Johnson tried a multi-prong approach. He combined heavy bombing of the north with the offer of economic assistance to North Vietnam.
From helping the Republic of South Vietnam combat communist insurgents (communist guerrillas=Viet Cong) to direct open warfare with the nation of North Vietnam.
Before reunification, Vietnam was divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam had a Sino-Soviet backed Communist government, while South Vietnam had a Western-backed Democratic government (at least in principle). Prior to the division of North and South Vietnam, it was subject to a French colonial government, whose control of the region was interrupted during WWII, when a Japanese occupational government controlled the region.
The US supported resistance to communism, so it backed the faction in the South, while Russia and China backed the faction in the North. The same had occurred earlier with North and South Korea. South Vietnam became a nominal democracy but an unpopular authoritarian regime, and after the US withdrew its aid, it was overrun by the forces of North Vietnam in 1975.
SOUTH Vietnam was called the "REPUBLIC of South Vietnam." Everyone in those days just called North Vietnam...NORTH VIETNAM.
Cong is short for Viet Cong. The Viet Cong were the communist guerrilla forces backed by North Vietnam when they fought against South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
