The clothes of the Pima were practically identical to those of their neighbours the Papago and Maricopa.
Men wore a very small breechclout of tanned hide or cotton, with almost no flaps. Leggings of deerskin were gartered below the knee. Shirts were very rare as the climate was far too hot for such items. Later, some men adopted Mexican-style white cotton trousers and a red cotton breechclout (a favourite colour among the Pima) attached to a wide cloth belt.
Women originally wore a wraparound deerskin skirt, or a one-piece fringed fibre skirt over some kind of padding, giving the effect of a bustle. After contact with missionaries, they wrapped their bodies in a length of cotton fabric, like a sarong. Later still, red cotton blouses were obtained from traders.
No footwear was generally used, except for long journeys when sandals of rawhide or twisted willow bark were used.
Cotton or rabbit skin blankets were used at night, some black-and-white striped blankets were traded from the Hopi.
Both men and women wore their hair long and loose, without headbands or hats; some men wore a kind of turban made of long woven bands.
Girls were tattooed at puberty with three black vertical lines below the mouth. For ceremonies, women painted vertical white stripes on their cheeks.
