They advised the Soviet Union that an attack on the US from Cuba would be considered as an attack by the Soviet Union- and response would be to the Soviet union, not just to Cuba. The US also implemented a blockade of shipping going to Cuba- no ship carrying missiles would be allowed to go TO Cuba.
Nuclear attack to japan
The Soviet Union began placing nuclear armed guided missiles in Cuba, where they could be used to attack to US with almost no warning. The US declared that any attack coming from Cuba would be considered an attack from the Soviet Union, would result in retaliation to the Soviet Union, and directed that the missiles be removed from Cuba. The US Navy began a shipping blockade and stopped additional missiles from being taken to Cuba.
