WHAT did they do? They built the transcontinental railroad from the eastern half of the country to California.

WHY did they do it? For land grants and for profits. Railroads are in the business of carrying things from one place to another. So farmers could ship their fruits, vegetables and cattle to distant markets and make money, while industries in the cities could ship their machines and tools, and the railroads made money carrying the stuff each way.
