Actually the fortune was started by Cornelius Vanderbilt, the "Commodore" in steamships. The big paddle wheel ones we usually associate with the Mississippi River. He owned and operated fleets of them. Later, during the civil war, he sold his steamship interests and invested in Railroads, eventually becoming the largest shareholder of the New York Central Railroad (among others) and the country's richest man before his death in 1877. His son, William Henry continued to operate the railroad interests and doubled the family fortune.
