Without Oxygen to supply the fuel cells, the Apollo Command/Service module quickly lost power., and any source of sustained water for the astronauts.This meant that the three astronauts had to use the two man lunar module as a lifeboat for a slingshot trip around the moon. The Lunar module, is a spacecraft part of the Apollo spacecraft, the job is they use the Lunar module to transfer astronauts to and from the moon.

Apollo 1 did not launch as there was a fire killing 3 astronauts. Apollo 2 and 3 did not use the full Apollo name and actually happened before Apollo 1. Apollo 4, 5 and 6 were unmanned launches. Apollo 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 were manned launches.
The Lunar Module was, in itself, a spaceship. It was designed to land on the Moon, and then its upper portion would carry the astronauts back up to the Command Module, the main spaceship. During the Apollo 13 disaster, the astronauts had to use the LM as a lifeboat (still connected to the CM) to stay alive, and then use its engine to get them headed back to Earth. If it were not designed as a separate spacecraft, it would not have had, independently, the ability to do these things, as the CM disaster would have affected it too. Only its independence allowed it to act as a separate (but still connected) craft.
