The Berlin Blockade is known as the period of time from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949 when the British and Americans flew supplies to the city of Berlin, which was blockaded by the Soviets. The actions carried out during this time are known as the Berlin Airlift.
Following the closure of land access to West Berlin in 1948 by Stalin the Americans, French and British organised the provision of supplies by aeroplane. This was known as "The Berlin Airlift".
It began soon after WWII. Berlin was part of western Europe but it was entirely inside Russian territory and Russia blocked western vehicles to cross their territory in order to supply goods to Berlin. The western powers began an airlift to fly across Russian territory to Berlin

Allies had to air lift supplies into West Berlin because the USSR had all roads blockaded. The eastern part of the city was under the control of the USSR, and the western region was under the control of the allies. The USSR hoped that by shutting off all routes, the allies would turn total control of Berlin over to them.
