The captain was not present at the time of the collision but the First Officer DID give commands to avoid the berg - rather than risk a head-on collision.
Survivors of the Titanic testified that J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of the White Star Line and passenger aboard the Titanic, suggested to Captain Edward Smith and chief engineer Joseph Bell that they test the ship's speed. However, there hasn't been any substantial evidence to support this claim.
The captain. That's why he didn't even bother to try and escape because he knew he would spend the rest of his life in jail
All the lifeboats had gone so there was nothing they could do except try to take their mind of the fact that most of tthem were going to die.
A lot of steerage passengers died because they were mostly on the lowest levels and the water reached them first. It filled up too fast, unlike the top decks that had a lot more time to try to escape.
Try an on line site about the Titanic. There are passenger lists on these sites.
Well it must have gone a couple of metre's then stopped when the boat tilted at an angle but their is a possibility that i could have gone backwards because the boat was put into reverse to try and stop the collision. But it cant have gone far simply because it was sinking there was no point in going anywhere if your sinking.
I believe the reason the captain never tried to help himself is because of the saying 'a good captain always goes down with his ship'. Another reason could be that he was the one who steered them into the iceberg so maybe he is just taking the blame.
In chapter 9 of "SOS Titanic," passengers aboard the Titanic start to sense that something is wrong as the ship begins to list to one side. There is panic and chaos as people scramble for lifeboats and try to make their way to safety, with the crew struggling to maintain order. The chapter ends with the ship sinking into the icy waters of the North Atlantic, leaving many passengers and crew fighting for survival.
The captain of the titanic wanted to reach New York in record time, the captain decided to take a detour to try and achieve this goal, a iceberg was spotted as it was pitch black they could hardly see, and the engineers put the titanic into reverse gear which was a big mistake, if they kept at the same speed they could have avoided it and gotten closer to New York or atleast another ship. anyway... the titanic began to fill up with sea water as did the lifeboats with people, stranded in ice cold water for 4 hours, Man, woman and child lost their lives to the sea. No ships were in the radius of the Titanic, and it would've taken a long time to get out to them.
