The Halloween that is known today had its roots in the Celtic tradition of Samhain. The Celts celebrated Samhain from October 31 to November 1.
Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the "dark half of the year" (until the next harvest). The Celts believed that the border between this world and the otherworld became thin on Samhain. Because some animals and plants were dying, it thus allowed the dead to reach back through the veil that separated them from the living. As a result, Samhain is often connected with similar festivals of the dead, which connects it to the Halloween tradition of being "scary".
The celtics started to do HALLOWEEN after Ireland....they celebrated the night of ghost and goblins!
Celtics, Romans and Christians
As a way of giving thanks to their idols for a good harvest, and to protect themselves from the Underworld by sacrificing animals.
The Celtics believed that supernatural creatures will be able to cross through their world to ours on the October 31st.
The holiday was originally used to celebrate the dead. It is believed to be originated from the Celtics and the Pagans but was later Christianized into the holiday it is today.
It was known as the Celtic festival "Samhain", it means Summer's end and/or the start of winter.(There are several schools of thought on this subject)
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).The Celtic new year was celebrated on November 1. The night before they believed the ghosts of the dead returned to earth and on that night, October 31, (now Halloween) they lit bonfires and dressed in costume.
