The Coast Chumash of the area that became California were essentially hunter-gatherers, planting no crops. They were expert fishermen, using unique plank boats (tomol) for sea fishing and even whaling. Their diet consisted of fish, clams, mussels, abalone, wild plants, processed acorns, small animals such as rabbits and larger game like deer. Meat was roasted and fish was often made into soup.
