One important element of the Code of Chivalry was mercy. Killing an unarmed knight would not have been consistent with the code as it would be merciless. It happened, from time to time, that important people killed prisoners or others who were not armed. Henry V of England was accused of this, and it was considered a disgrace by many people.

The Medieval Code of Chivalry was a code of conduct associated with knighthood and the noble class in Western Europe. It was a martial tradition. It regulated the duty of a gentleman for life most importantly in the areas of religion, military duty and love. Individual knights selected their own particular virtues that they would live by such as piety, courage, honour, respect for ladies of the nobility, mercy, valour and fairness. Chivalry is not comparable to a law code it co-existed with Feudalism.
