the Southerners couldn't go without slavery, and the northerners wanted it gone, so they compromised that they should wait 20 years to agree on and see what they do about slavery. most states were against it, and found ways to stop slavery without breaking the laws.

Citizens didn't ratify it nor have a say in what was in it. The constitutional convention kept it secret the entire time and it was the delegates who ratified it.

It is true to say that; as far as congress was concerned the main purpose for a 1787 convention in Philadelphia was to revise the articles of confederation.
