$100 bills actually date back to revolutionary times. However, those were issued by individual states and had little more than faith to back their value. In 1811 the Bank of the United States began issuing $100 notes that had 'Bank of the United States' written across the bill, two '100' designations in the upper left and right corners, and pictures of six founding fathers (three along each edge).
