14 July is called Bastille Day in France. It is almost the equivalent of Independence Day in the United States. On that day the people stormed the Bastille Castle and Prison. They released the prisoners who had been locked up without any charges pressed against against them and people convicted without a fair trial. France still uses Roman Law for its criminal code. It lacks the safeguards of English (and American) Law, but is far superior to Japanese and other Law.
