The other answer: The Minutemen of the Revolutionary War period were American volunteer soldiers (militia). They had civilian occupations, but were trained to be ready to fight, ostensibly "at a minute's notice." They represented a rapid response force to any British attempt at armed sorties.

On April 19, 1775, Minuteman and Sons of Liberty member Paul Revere spread the news that "the Redcoats are coming." Paul Revere was captured before completing his mission, but later escaped. After a skirmish in Lexington, the British marched towards the arsenal in Concord to collect the weapons stored there, only to meet and exchange fire with a superior colonial militia force (including Minutemen). The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first armed conflicts between the two sides, and led to the Siege of Boston, which penned up the British garrison in the city.

* Both an anticommunist group of the 1960s (led by Robert DePugh) and a civil vigilance group of the 21st century (Minuteman Civil Defense Corps) took their names from this earlier organization.
