Most peasants were poor farmers who could not afford to eat in restaurants. Most towns did not have restaurants, though they did have inns that served food and small food stalls. Peasants seldom at at such places unless they were on pilgrimage. If they ate at an inn, it would have been the simplest food available, probably stew and bread.
Peasants lived in small farming villages. There simply would not have been restaurants to eat in.
People living in a town in the middle ages had more options. The middle ages lacked an equivalent of the modern restaurant, with table service and a choice of foods cooked to order. Inns would have had food available for travelers lodging with them. This was likely roasted meat, bread, cheese, and a dish or two of stew or pottage. Ale was the common drink. Wine was available, but several times more expensive.
Taverns existed but they were primarily drinking establishments, often focused on wine. Food service would have been basic, and in some cases hot food may not have been available at all.
The closest thing to a restaurant was a cook shop. Towns and cities had shops that offered ready to eat hot food. These shops would have been more like a supermarket deli than a restaurant, however, in that they were not cooking to order but rather cooking a selection of dished through the day. Pies and pasties were the most common, often savory rather than sweet, something like a modern pot pie. Such shops might offer roasted meats, whole roasted poultry in pastry, and similar things. One could also take one's own animal to a cook shop and have them cook it, as many town homes lacked any kitchen other than the fireplace or hearth. Others shops offering ready to eat food included bakeries for bread, and pasty and wafer shops.
During the Middle Ages peasants were not highly respected, nor considered superiour people. Therefore the food they ate was unfresh, dirty, or old.
