The pharaoh's in ancient Egypt ruled over the entire land and it's contents. (People, buildings, monuments.) They were like rulers or Kings. One thing is for sure, they made Egypt a better place. They increased trade and built huge monuments. Increasing trade put them in a better position for crafting. (Jewelry, architecture.) It also spread their presence. (Made Egypt more well known, or put them on the map.) The huge monuments increased religion in Egypt. You could even think of it as keeping the people loyal, or even pleased perhaps.
I would say the four most important pharaohs were Pharaoh Kufu (The pyramid builder. He was responsible for the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza.) Pharaoh Senusret I (The first) (He was known as the patron of the arts. Art, literature, and architecture flourished under his ruling.) Pharaoh Hatshepsut (Promoter of Egyptian Trade. She was one of the first female pharaohs. She promoted trade with other countries.) Pharaoh Ramses II (the second) (He was known as the Military leader, Master builder, and Ramses the Great. He signed the world's first treaty and was the first pharaoh to rule for over 60 years.)
