In 63 BC the Romans won the Third Mithridatic War against Mithridtes VI the king of Pontus (in northeastern Turkey) who had tried to take over the rest or Turkey and his ally, Tigranes the Great, the king of Armenia (which then was much bigger than now). They Annexed part of Pontus to one of their provinces and turned Armenia into a client state. They also annexed Syria and turned Judea into a client state.

Judea was turned into a client kingdom by the Romans in 63 BC. It was annexed as a province of the Roman Empire in 6 AD. It remained a Roman province until 638 when it was taken over by the Arabs.

After the death of Alexander the Great, his generals split his empire among themselves. One of these generals was Seleucus, received the Eastern part of the empire. He was the first member of the Seleucid Dynasty. The Seleucid Empire, and the dynasty, survived until 63 BC, when what was left of the empire became part of the Roman province of Syria.

Pompey the Great fought wars in the east and expanded the empire eastwards. He commanded the Roman army in the Third Mithridatic War against the king of Pontus. The kingdom of Pontus was in north-western Turkey. Their king, Mithridates VI, fought the Romans. Pompey won the war in 63 BC and turned Pontus into a Roman Province. In 64 BC he had deposed the king of Syria and turned Syria into a Roman province. In 63 BC he intervened in a civil war in Judaea and besieged Jerusalem. Pompey reinstated the local ruler. Judaea retained autonomy, but was dependent of the Roman administration in Syria, her coastal lands were seized, and she had to pay a tribute.
