There might have been two. There might have been six. We don't know.

More than likely, these Magi, or Astrologers, went back to their own country.

They went back home by a different route so they would not have to tell Herod where Jesus was. They knew Herod wanted to kill him, but they believed Jesus was the Messiah and didn't want him dead.
