Slaves did not gain much at all, although some lucky ones paid for their freedom. They lost their families, their dignity, the will to live, homes, friends and a lot more. It was not very nice for them.
Sparta's population was mostly slaves, and their economy depended on slave labor. A slave revolt would certainly be economically devastating, and there was a distinct chance that the slaves would win and overthrow the Spartan government, so obviously this was always something Sparta was worried about.
Slaves weren't educated because they (as in slave owners) were afraid of a revolt if they read things in the local newspaper or could read important documents which could of helped them win the Civil war themselves.
Slaves were SOLD by bids. If someone saw a slave they liked they would bid for it and the highest bidder would win. Think of EBAY only your right in front of the 'item' or in this case slave you would wish to buy. And they were sometimes very costly.
