President Hoover nominated Hughes to Chief Justice of the United States in 1930, to serve on the Court following the death of William Howard Taft, who was Supreme Court Chief Justice from 1921-1930, and President of the United States from 1909-1913. Hughes lead the Supreme Court from 1930-1941.
