Panama was part of Colombia. Then in 1903 the U.S and Colombia signed the Hay-Herran Treaty to finish the Panama Canal, which the french did not complete. But the Colombian government rejected the treaty. So the Panamanians were highly upset and the chose to separate from Colombia.
US President Theodore Roosevelt desired to have a canal dug to quicken the travelling time from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. A treaty between USA and Columbia was signed on Jan 22 1903, but Columbia rejected it. Panama declared independence from Columbia (with US support) on Nov 3; Panama recognized on November 6th, and treaty to build the Panama canal signed on November 19, 1903.
