The Southern Colonies' economy relied heavily on slave work and agriculture, typically the production of cotton.
Because they were to lazy to work them selves and because the were to poor to pay other people.
The early settlers settled in the southern colonies since there many riches associated with these colonies. One of the man cash crops in the area was tobacco and the settlers came here for economic gains.

Southern Colonies had slaves to do their work on the plantation, Middle Colonies had some slaves but they were kinda in the middle, while the New England Colonies had no slaves.

The southern colonies were populated, because people in England heard of the riches in America. They soon learned how well cash crops grew such as indigo, tobacco, and cotton. Men who were in debt had the option under James Oglethorpe to travel to Georgia to work as indentured servants.
The Southern Colonies were of an agrarian economy, so they worked in agriculture, which called for plantations for the crops and the slaves to work on the crops. This became so deeply rooted that this is why the Southern Colonies that were soon to be the Southern States wished for slavery to be legal in the US.
