Joan of Arc had a banner made for her at the same time as her suit of armor. It was done by a Scotsman at Tours and showed Jesus holding the world with an angel on each side. The rest of it was all white with the fleur de lys of France on it. Joan much preferred to carry her beautiful white banner into battle rather than her sword because she "did not want to kill anyone". She often waved it in battle to inspire her troops to charge.

The flag was important during the war because it was a symbol of the new country; the Confederate States of America. However, do you mean why is it so popular today?? Most people are familiar with the Confederate Battle Flag. The battle flag, which is different than the Confederate National Flag, was the one carried in battle. Today it is known as the Rebel Flag. This flag has become a symbol of rebelliousness in many forms and many people display it to show they are different. It is used by the KKK and racists. It is still displayed by Southerners who like to show their pride in their country background.
Not a flag in the modern sense; you mean the gonfanon bauçant, carried by the gonfanier (the Order's standard bearer). The name means "piebald banner" and was black-over-white.
Red background... blue diagonal cross with stars inside the cross. The above description is of the Battle Flag carried by regiments in battle. Each regiment(Confederate or Union) carried one National Flag and one Regimental battle flag. The Union carried the Stars & Stripes and the regimental flag was usually Blue with an eagle for infantry. The Confederates carried their National Flag and a battle flag, which has been called the "Stars & Bars" or the "Rebel Flag". The National Flag of the Confederates States of America went through 3 variations. The 1st National Flag was an all white flag with upper corner having the Red square with the blue "X" cross with 13 stars---or a miniature of the battle flag. This flag had too much White in it and resembled a surrender flag. The 2nd National Flag was RED with one horizontal White bar that divided the flag into 3 equal stripes. The upper corner had a Blue field with 11 white stars in a circle. This flag resembled the Union Stars and Stripes from a distance. Again, caused confusion on the battlefield. The 3rd National Flag was a white flag with a wide Red vertical stripe on the outside edge. The upper corner again had the Rebel "Stars & Bars" emblem. The Battle Flag carried by the regiments varied greatly. Most were square instead of being rectangular. Many were the "Stars & Bars" as described above. This flag was typical for regiments in Virginia. The regiment would record their battle record by sewing on the names of the places where they fought. These were added in the red field or sometimes on the wide white borders along the edge or the cross. Many units created battle flags based on their State's flag or crest. Texas flags resembled the current Texas State flag. Battle flags of South Carolina had the Palmetto tree, Louisianna flags had the pelican. General Hardee adopted a flag for his regiments that was a dark Blue flag with a round White circle in the center and a wide White trim. This became known as the "Hardee flag" and was prevelant among units in what became the Army of Tenessee commanded by General Brag. These flags would have the units name in the white circle and their victories along the white border or on the blue field. Custermen

The Confederate States of America had 3 different versions of their National Flag. The common flag most familiar as a "Rebel flag" was actually the battle flag carried by each regiment to help identify the unit. Each regiment usually carried their regimental battle flag and the National flag. Names of the National FlagsFirst National FlagSecond National FlagThird National Flag Other Battle Flags were designed based on the individual state from where the unit was from. Each design had a name, usually the name of their commanding general or the Army. Thus the Army of Tennessee had adopted a Blue flag with a White Disc in the center and wide white trim and it became known as the Army of Tennessee flag. The soldiers from Kentucky formed into a unit and adopted a flag that was identified as the flag of the Kentucky Brigade. Before the war really started, the first flag used by the early Confederate States was the "Bonnie Blue Flag" which consisted of a blue flag with a White Star.
