The prestigious university of VMI was nicknamed the West Point of the Confederacy. This Southern military university provided soldiers on the South when they graduated. Stonewall Jackson taught there and it was cannon fire from the VMI cadets that fired on the supply ship headed to Fort Sumter. This university still exists.
There were several battles fought in southwest Virginia. One took places on the grounds of VMI (Virginia military institute. there were only young boys in the school at the time because all f the men were fighting for the south however a union force came to VMI and the young boys fire on them the union force return fire and killed five of the young defense. Sorry I don't remember the battle.
Stonewall Jackson had been an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute beginning in 1851. VMI is located in Lexington, Virginia . He became a professor there later in his tenure there. The university remains there to this day.
